At the Nora Corners Shopping Center at 1460 E. 86th St., Total Wine & More is preparing to open its first Indianapolis location on Nov. 4.
A portion of the former Marsh supermarket will be used for the new store, which will occupy 26,000 square feet. The remaining portion of the building is home to an Aldi supermarket.
Total Wine & More, headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, has 212 locations across the East Coast, the Midwest, and the West Coast of the United States. Stores in the chain typically stock between 8,000 and 10,000 types of wine, as well as between 3,000 and 4,000 types of both beer and spirits. The Nora location is a typical size. Cigars, glassware, gifts, food, and other items are also available for purchase in the shops.
Additionally, the Nora store will have a cigar humidor as well as a room for customer classes and events that include tasting sessions led by well-known beer, wine, and spirits producers via live video.
The classroom at Total Wine & More is also available at no charge to community organizations that need a place to meet.
Total Wine & More’s vice president of public affairs and community relations, Edward Cooper, said, “We’re not the corner liquor store.” In other words, “the customer experience is everything to us.”
Indiana will become the 26th state in which Total Wine & More operates when the Nora store opens. Cooper said that the company has no firm plans to open additional Indiana stores, but it is “looking for opportunities” and “potentially there will be others.”
In 1991, brothers David and Robert Trone opened a 1,000-square-foot package store in Delaware, which was the beginning of Total Wine & More. Later, the company expanded to the Midwest and West after the original East Coast states were covered.

Total Wine & More had to sue the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission to gain permission to open a location in the state due to its out-of-state ownership.
As a result of Indiana state law, the commission refused Total Wine & More’s liquor licence application in March. The law stated that it could not issue a retail licence to a company unless at least 60% of the company’s common stock was owned by people who had lived in Indiana for five years.
Days later, Total Wine & More filed a lawsuit against the commission in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, claiming that the denial of the permit violated the commerce clause of the U.S.
